What exactly could hypnotherapy help me with ?

What exactly could hypnotherapy help me with ?

It’s just for weight loss or giving up smoking – isn’t it ?!

While Hypnotherapy is certainly very effective for both these issues it can also be incredibly successful in helping with so much more !

It can actually have a positive effect on any problem where thinking is involved – and when you stop to consider it – isn’t that most issues !!

.

.

.

.
Of course certain circumstances happen in our life, and in the world, that we have no control over. However, where we do have control is in how we react. It might not seem like it at the time as we are often unaware of these thoughts, embedded in our unconscious minds. Hypnotherapy can help you identify and let go of unhelpful unconscious thoughts and replace them with ones that support and inspire.

.

Our thoughts   ->  our feelings   ->  our actions/behaviours/habits   ->  our results in life

.

So if you want to change the results in your life, if you want to start behaving differently, replace old habits with new or if you want to change how you feel it all leads back to changing your thoughts.

Can you see now that this is how hypnotherapy can help.

Exam Success !!

At this time of year many students, but also their families, are all too aware of the exams that are looming ( we have two revisers in our house at the moment so I speak from personal experience !)

I see a lot of students both from schools and universities who have realised that hypnotherapy can be just as vital to their revision process as the number of hours put in at their desk – so have your ever considered that hypnotherapy could super charge your revision and exam
performance ?

.

stress of exams

.

This year I have developed a hypnotherapy ‘Preparing for your exams’ package which includes two face to face hypnotherapy sessions , recordings to listen to in between sessions to maximise the power of revision and enhance exam performance, email support and short motivational videos as a power boost that can even be watched on that walk to the exam.

Are you interested but not sure exactly how this may help?

Exam preparation is one of those things that is simple but not necessarily easy !

Why ? because as in so many other areas of our lives our emotions can come in and disrupt everything.

Hypnotherapy can help manage your emotions and get them to work with you rather than disrupting you – just as it is being used in preparation and performance in professional sport.

Stressful thoughts actually get in the way of learning. They set you into the ‘flight or fight’ mode and shut down the wider more imaginative problem solving thinking which comes from the frontal lobes. Wouldn’t you rather feel calm and harness the potential of this type of thinking ? Isn’t it about being focused and productive and revising ‘smart’ rather than revising ‘long’ !
.

.

There are certain tools which can really help revision. Writing and sticking to a realistic timetable is the first to tackle and hypnotherapy can really help with the motivation to do this. It is also vitally important to timetable regular breaks and treats to utilise the science of how the mind works. The important thing is to allow knowledge to be transferred from the conscious mind (short term memory) to the unconscious (long term memory) where it is then available whenever you want to retrieve it. Having a break, changing focus, doing something you enjoy not only improves the emotions but actually enhances this trickling down of vital learning.
.

learning

.

Hypnotherapy helps you deal with all the emotions you’ll experience during the learning process and helps you stay motivated when it feels too difficult.

Visualising success is also vitally important. During hypnotherapy you can harness the power of creative visualisation to imagine being in the exam with it going really well and also visualise getting the results and feeling happy and proud. On some level this frees the mind up to let go of doubt and instead focus on the ‘how will I do this’ rather than questioning ‘can I do this’. You could be amazed at how much energy can then be freed up to focus on exam preparation and performance instead.

.

.

On the exam day itself hypnotherapy can really help you tap into calm, focused, resourceful thinking. If there is a difficult or unforeseen question instead of being thrown and it affecting you going forward it helps you deal with it in the best way you can and then let it go. No ongoing discouragement or allowing it to affect your performance with the rest of the paper, just like the thinking of the best sportsmen and women.
.

Developing skills to deal with lack of motivation, overwhelm and discouragement will not only be valuable during this exam period but will be great great tools to take out into everyday life. So maybe you see that hypnotherapy could help you feel better during this revision period but are still asking could it actually make a difference to the exams ?

.

Obviously I am not claiming that hypnotherapy will improve your IQ but what I can say is that it can super charge your revision and allow you to utilise more of your brain’s potential and that definitely can correlate with improved exam performance and results.

Visualisation – Is it just woo ??

Have you discovered the power of visualisation yet ?
.

visualisation

.

Or are you still missing out by considering it just ‘ new age woo ‘.

Have you recognised that the biggest shift you can have in life is to see yourself as separate from your thoughts, learning to control them, rather than being at the mercy of your thoughts controlling you.

Visualising can be a powerful way towards that shift .

Sport is an area which has really taken the power of visualisation on board. Successful sportsmen, women and teams all consider mind training to be just as important as the physical training. Lots employ sports psychologists, who consider positive visualisation as one of their most important strategies to teach.
.

sports visualisation

.

Visualisation works in two major ways.

When we really want something we often spend a lot of mental energy going round and round in circles.

I want it ….but am I good enough….yes I deserve it ….oh no I won’t be successful …. yes I can do it ….no, I’m not lucky …. I do have the skills though … but perhaps I’m not enough… something might go wrong … someone might be better …..

.

exhausting eh !!

Visualisation works by imprinting the belief in your mind that what you want has already happened. As it is now a fait accompli you can let go of that exhausting pattern of doubt. Getting rid of the “whether it will happen” questioning leaves room instead for the ‘ how will it happen ‘ strategy planning. A much more productive and positive place to be.

Then the second way visualisation can be used is as part of your strategy.

Australian Psychologist Alan Richardson did a famous study with basketball players, assessing their ability to make free throws. He had three groups, one who practiced 20 mins a day, one group who visualised themselves successfully making the throws and a control group that did neither.
.

basketball
.

The group that ‘only’ visualised had a similar improvement in their skills to those that had actually practised. It’s a pity he didn’t have a fourth group who practiced and visualised to demonstrate the synergistic effect of doing both.

So maybe now you can buy into the theory that visualisation works – but are still wondering how do you go about it?

During a hypnotherapy session we utilise the powerful effects of trance to enhance visualisation but you can mimic these effects in the comfort of your own home. What you are aiming to do is, by using all your senses, create all the images, sounds and feelings in your mind of the successful outcome you want and /or the improvements in your activity that will achieve this.

So how do you do it?

Relax, take a couple of deep breathes, let go of all the tension, and close your eyes. It works even better if you find a quiet spot where nobody will bother you. One of the best times to do it is just before you go to sleep or when you first wake up. A few minutes regularly is all you need.
.

.

Settle on an image that epitomises what you want. If you were going to make a short film that would instantly portray this, what would you be doing, saying, who else would be there, what would they be saying, what is the soundtrack to your film. What are you feeling. Try to imagine actually feeling that in your body rather than labelling the emotion. Edit your film, take some shots from the first person viewpoint and then some as if observing yourself. Enjoy the whole process and see if it remains the same each time or if different things pop up and embrace it all.

As you practice you set down those new neural pathways in your brain. The beliefs get stronger everyday and, with that doubt gone, you free up your imagination to find new ways to hone your skills. These also then become part of the process of getting where you want to be.
.

visualization 2
.

Visualisation can be used for absolutely anything you want in your life, successful relationships, work, performance or achievements. What you might not have appreciated is that you are already frequently visualising outcomes, but often not those that you actually want. Worrying about the future and imaging things going wrong is a prime example of this or wanting to be slim but focusing on hating being fat is another.

Why not make now, the time to change ? Take control of your thoughts instead of them controlling you. This famous Henry Ford saying is very apt

From today you could start to train your brain to use visualisation in a positive way !

The choice is yours !

WAKE UP !!!

wake-up

Do you think hypnotherapy can only help by putting you into a trance ?
hypnotised

You might be surprised to hear, that on many occasions it’s actually more about waking you up.

Rear view of a young man waking up in bed and stretching his arm

How so ?
Our minds love being efficient. They spend lots of time setting down automatic unconscious patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviours, freeing up our conscious minds to concentrate on more important things. Think of some of the things you have learnt throughout your life – walking, riding a bike, learning to drive – when you stop to think about it, aren’t all these now automatic patterns happening outside your conscious awareness.

Well that isn’t a problem, is it ?

Of course not – it can be very beneficial – but what your if brain also lays down automatic patterns that do cause problems in your life.

Overeating, overdrinking and smoking are examples that come to mind. Clients often describe having no conscious recollection but before they know it the jar of biscuits, bottle of wine or packet of cigarettes are finished and the whole process seems a blur.

Why I do hypnotherapy !

.

Do you ever wonder why do I do hypnotherapy?

I often use stories and metaphors as part of my work so perhaps this story will speak to you !

Once upon a time, there was an old man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach every morning before he began his work. Early one morning, he was walking along the shore after a big storm had passed and found the vast beach littered with starfish stretching in both directions as far as the eye could see.

.

Off in the distance, the old man noticed a small boy approaching. As the boy walked, he paused every so often and as he grew closer, the man could see that he was occasionally bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea. The boy came closer still and the man called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

.

.

The young boy paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean. The tide has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t return to the sea by themselves. When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.”

The old man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.”

The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the ocean. Then he turned, smiled and said, “I made a difference to that one!

Games of Life

pictionary

I love the game of Pictionary
Unfortunately it proved too heavy for our luggage allowance so on holiday we made do with the much lighter Uno instead !

Another great universal game and anyway probably much more suited to whiling away lazy hours relaxing in mediterranean cafes in shady plazas. Why does playing Pictionary always seems to get so loud and boisterous !
.

.
However all this got me thinking again about games as a metaphor for life. Pictionary is just like our unconscious mind relying on images and symbols for communication. The best pictionary drawings are not necessarily those that display a true representation drawn with every single detail, actually these can often waste time and derail the thinking process. Aren’t the best pictures those that really epitomise the subject in a few deft strokes.

Now I know there isn’t a pictionary card with the subject “the beneficial effects of Hypnotherapy ” but if there was I think this would be a great drawing to represent it.
.

hypno

.

Perhaps the game of Pictionary can also be a good metaphor for life. Maybe it’s better to focus on the true essence of what we want, love, happiness and security and not get derailed by trying to control the details and minutiae. Sometimes changing focus to looking at the bigger picture means we can let go of our anxiety and then trust that our experiences will play out, just as they should, in our everyday lives.

There is nothing wrong with YOU

I see so many people who have an underlying belief or fear that there is something wrong with them. Somehow they feel they are not good enough or are unloveable but this is often not apparent to others or even to themselves in their everyday life. On the surface they may seem content or have a happy go lucky facade. Sometimes this fear and doubt can also be disguised very deeply under a impenetrable veneer of self confidence or even arrogance.

.
autumn-heart-tree-fall

I hold the belief that there is absolutely nothing wrong with you as a person and this strongly underpins all of my therapy sessions.

Hypnotherapy is never about changing who you are – there has never been anything wrong with you at all. However where there may be something unhelpful or ‘wrong’ is in the way that you are thinking which leads to unhelpful behaviour and unwanted consequences in your life.

So can you see that hypnotherapy is about viewing yourself with compassion but at the same time empowering you and providing a tool for you to use to help match your thinking and doing to what you want in your life.

Have you ever told your children when they were doing something naughty “it’s not you I don’t like, it’s the behaviour ! “ Isn’t it time to make that same distinction for yourself.
.

naughty child

Our unconscious minds are always trying their best and are completely motivated by what they perceive as our best interests.

This can be really hard to believe when you feel so stuck . Perhaps you want to lose weight, stop smoking or start exercising as your health is at risk but you are receiving negative messages ‘ why bother’, ‘start tomorrow instead’, ‘you deserve to treat yourself – you work so hard”. Perhaps you find you are sabotaging yourself in your work or personal relationships. Maybe you feel depressed or anxious, struggling with a phobia or just generally dissatisfied and are asking yourself how on earth can my unconscious think this is in my best interests? Sometimes it can be really hard to believe that your unconscious mind is actually on your side!

The problem is that at this moment there must be a stronger drive within your unconscious thinking to maintain the unwanted behaviour rather than to change. Do you want to get to the root of all this and help all the parts of your mind to start working together for what you actually want and deserve.

Would it be helpful to imagine your thoughts as this tangled ball of threads. Some are thick, some thin, some strong, some weak, some are long and stretch right back to childhood, some are shorter but all are jumbled up in your unconscious mind as this complex mess. Where do you even start to begin to unravel it all, let alone make something useful out of it.

.
wool

Hypnotherapy gives you a way. Recognise there has never been anything wrong with you, if there has been a problem it was only that you have been caught in this tangle of thoughts.

.

tapestry of life

Hypnotherapy is about unravelling the threads of thoughts , sorting them out and finding a way to weave this myriad of textures and colours into something both useful and beautiful.

This amazing rich tapestry of your life !

The key to your unconscious mind

Have you ever wondered about the difference between being hypnotised and experiencing hypnotherapy or perhaps you just thought that these words were synonymous. Well they are related but are actually quite different terms describing different processes.

Hypnosis or going into trance is the way you gain access to your unconscious mind and then once you get there hypnotherapy is a way to help you make the changes that you want.

For a few people just simply going into trance or hypnosis can be enough to allow sufficient shifts in thinking to resolve their problem or issue. It’s almost as if once the conscious mind gets out of the way the wisdom of their unconscious mind can work everything out perfectly without interference.

However most people require further help to shift unhelpful thought patterns, take the emotions out of painful memories and let go of feelings of not being worthy or loveable. As a hypnotherapist I have many ways of guiding you through these processes and would tailor these specifically to you.

I was thinking of an image that might make this clearer and this came to mind.

Do you remember this episode of FRIENDS ?

.
monica's cupboard
.

THE ONE WITH MONICA’S SECRET CLOSET

.

.

What if we were to think of our unconscious minds as such a cupboard, jam packed with stored memories, old unhelpful thoughts and conditioning. The door is locked but you might have a sense of what lies behind it and a feeling of perhaps what it is that you need to do to sort it out but you can’t be sure. You feel powerless to do anything as the door is locked and perhaps you have just become resigned to that uneasy feeling.

Well hypnosis is your key !

.

key-in-the-door-
.

Once you use the key of hypnosis to open your cupboard door it might be perfectly clear what it is you need to do to sort things out. Great !

However more commonly you might feel overwhelmed and completely unsure as to where to start.

Are you nervous about disturbing anything, is there so much stuffed in that you are afraid that it will all come crashing down on top of you and you won’t be able to cope?

As your hypnotherapist I can be like one of those professionals who can help you declutter the cupboard of your mind .

It is your cupboard, you are always in charge and you get to choose what you keep and what goes. Perhaps I can point out things you hadn’t seen lurking at the back of a shelf or find a new way to organise thoughts and memories that you will find supportive rather than sabotaging. As we go through the sessions, examining, sorting and letting go, don’t be surprised at the positive effects that will appear in your life.

You may come for hypnotherapy to deal with one particular problem but you will invariably find positive changes in other aspects of your life too.

.

dominos-1

.

For example when I first started practicing hypnotherapy I was amazed at the wider ramifications that something as straightforward as giving up smoking could have. However if you have been living with and believing the thought ‘ I can’t give up cigarettes ‘ actually being successful in doing this can set up a domino reaction in your mind. This can then help you knock down and stop believing all those other ‘ I can’t ‘ thoughts that are influencing you in everyday life.

Hypnotherapy is just like throwing a pebble into the pond of your unconscious mind – I wonder where the positive ripples could travel for you !

Do you want to go deeper and deeper ….

I often find people are fascinated by the idea of hypnotherapy but confused as to what it actually is and the mechanisms by which it works.

I could go into long wordy explanations but as a hypnotherapist I know that using images, stories and metaphors is far more effective in conveying an idea to the unconscious mind than words alone. For example take this image of an iceberg..
.

Iceberg

.

Our conscious mind, the part we can easily access and change is just like the tip of this iceberg. However as you may remember from physics lessons and can see from this picture, 9/10 of an iceberg lies beneath the surface. The majority of it is hidden from view just like the inaccessible enormity of our unconscious minds. As you can imagine without a strong intact base the iceberg would soon crack and disintegrate. Unsupportive thoughts , beliefs and memories that we may not even be aware of, deep in our unconscious minds, can have similar disturbing effects in our conscious minds that subsequently play out in our everyday lives.
.

iceberg_ted

I am sure you have heard that saying that we only use a small fraction of the power of our minds.

Seeing this image of the iceberg that makes perfect sense !

But are you asking yourself how can you use more of the hidden power beneath the surface of your mind?

Imagine how trying to dive down into the icy water without a proper wet suit and breathing equipment could be a very uncomfortable if not dangerous experience. Even if you were able to do this you would probably only get a quick glimpse of what lies below without any real opportunity to do any lasting work. Sometimes we need external support to do either what we want or need to do.

Perhaps this gives you more of a sense of how hypnotherapy could work for you? Allowing you to comfortably dive beneath the surface, open up a completely new perspective on your life and make the changes you want at a deeper level than you were ever able to do alone.

Time to take a new road?

Do you frequently feel a heavy sense of deja vu ?

Do you think you have dealt with a particular issue in your life and then seemingly out of the blue those same old feelings pop up yet again ?

Do you keep on getting stressed by the same sort of person or situation and feel despondent as this time you had really believed you were finally moving on ?

Have you tried to lose that same 10lbs over and over again – or tried to give up smoking or cut down on your drinking and after all that trying really hard find yourself back at square one ?

Does life seem to be going round and round in circles and you think becoming resigned to this will be the only thing that will bring you any peace ?

Perhaps this poem can give you an insight and a glimpse of a way out of your particular situation.

in the crack

An Autobiography – by Portia Nelson

Chapter One

I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost… I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter Two

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place.
But it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter Three

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in… it’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault… I get out immediately.

Chapter Four

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter Five

I walk down another street.

..

Which chapter would you say you are in at the moment?

Are you in Chapter One or Two where this quote from Einstein seems quite applicable

..

..

Awareness seems to strike in Chapter 3 and is definitely an important first step in change but awareness in itself is not always a magic wand. This is often the point at which someone will decide to come for hypnotherapy realising that it is their thinking that is the issue and they want some help to change it.

Chapter Four may start to feel like progress but still requires effort and will power both of which can easily fail when your are stressed or tired.

..

road-to-sunrise-3807662

..

So the aim of hypnotherapy is definitely Chapter Five, helping you find a way to walk down a completely different road. The issue of the hole is then no longer a part of your life. You hardly think those thoughts anymore and if you do they no longer have the same power over you.

Doesn’t that seem like a change you would be interested in experiencing ?
