What exactly could hypnotherapy help me with ?

It’s just for weight loss or giving up smoking – isn’t it ?!

While Hypnotherapy is certainly very effective for both these issues it can also be incredibly successful in helping with so much more !

It can actually have a positive effect on any problem where thinking is involved – and when you stop to consider it – isn’t that most issues !!

Of course certain circumstances happen in our life, and in the world, that we have no control over. However, where we do have control is in how we react. It might not seem like it at the time as we are often unaware of these thoughts, embedded in our unconscious minds. Hypnotherapy can help you identify and let go of unhelpful unconscious thoughts and replace them with ones that support and inspire.

Our thoughts   ->  our feelings   ->  our actions/behaviours/habits   ->  our results in life

So if you want to change the results in your life, if you want to start behaving differently, replace old habits with new or if you want to change how you feel it all leads back to changing your thoughts.

and I think this could so equally be applied to hypnotherapy.

The job of hypnotherapy is not to help shape you into some ideal that you imagine you ought to be but instead to help you find out who you already are, and truly become that person .

How often are our goals about adding to our lives with an underlying unrecognised assumption that we are not enough. Therefore we need more money, success, achievements, a better body, more friends.

We have got so used to feeling we need more and that we continually need to improve that we only think this is a commendable attribute.

After all a whole industry of self help has even been built upon this !

But what if all this were hiding who we really are and instead of helping us, is hindering us in living a life that would leave us feeling truly satisfied?

This doesn’t mean you have to stay where you are and not have goals or move forward but it is about understanding that the intention behind what we do can be the most powerful factor in our results.

What about changing the intention that underpins your life.

Could you live your life with the impetus to find out who you already are and then be that person rather than continually trying to improve yourself or mould yourself into someone you think you should be.

Your initial reaction might be surely I know who I am.

But really do you – how much is actual knowledge about yourself and how much is belief in old unexamined thoughts that might be actually untrue for you.

Letting go of your old repetitive patterns of thinking about yourself can be so powerful and make room for finding out who you really are and how you want to think. Hypnotherapy can be one of the means to start that process.

I love the game of Pictionary
Unfortunately it proved too heavy for our luggage allowance so on holiday we made do with the much lighter Uno instead !

Another great universal game and anyway probably much more suited to whiling away lazy hours relaxing in mediterranean cafes in shady plazas. Why does playing Pictionary always seems to get so loud and boisterous !

However all this got me thinking again about games as a metaphor for life. Pictionary is just like our unconscious mind relying on images and symbols for communication. The best pictionary drawings are not necessarily those that display a true representation drawn with every single detail, actually these can often waste time and derail the thinking process. Aren’t the best pictures those that really epitomise the subject in a few deft strokes.

Now I know there isn’t a pictionary card with the subject “the beneficial effects of Hypnotherapy ” but if there was I think this would be a great drawing to represent it.

Perhaps the game of Pictionary can also be a good metaphor for life. Maybe it’s better to focus on the true essence of what we want, love, happiness and security and not get derailed by trying to control the details and minutiae. Sometimes changing focus to looking at the bigger picture means we can let go of our anxiety and then trust that our experiences will play out, just as they should, in our everyday lives.

The key to your unconscious mind

Have you ever wondered about the difference between being hypnotised and experiencing hypnotherapy or perhaps you just thought that these words were synonymous. Well they are related but are actually quite different terms describing different processes.

Hypnosis or going into trance is the way you gain access to your unconscious mind and then once you get there hypnotherapy is a way to help you make the changes that you want.

For a few people just simply going into trance or hypnosis can be enough to allow sufficient shifts in thinking to resolve their problem or issue. It’s almost as if once the conscious mind gets out of the way the wisdom of their unconscious mind can work everything out perfectly without interference.

However most people require further help to shift unhelpful thought patterns, take the emotions out of painful memories and let go of feelings of not being worthy or loveable. As a hypnotherapist I have many ways of guiding you through these processes and would tailor these specifically to you.

What if we were to think of our unconscious minds as such a cupboard, jam packed with stored memories, old unhelpful thoughts and conditioning. The door is locked but you might have a sense of what lies behind it and a feeling of perhaps what it is that you need to do to sort it out but you can’t be sure. You feel powerless to do anything as the door is locked and perhaps you have just become resigned to that uneasy feeling.

Once you use the key of hypnosis to open your cupboard door it might be perfectly clear what it is you need to do to sort things out. Great !

However more commonly you might feel overwhelmed and completely unsure as to where to start.

Are you nervous about disturbing anything, is there so much stuffed in that you are afraid that it will all come crashing down on top of you and you won’t be able to cope?

As your hypnotherapist I can be like one of those professionals who can help you declutter the cupboard of your mind .

It is your cupboard, you are always in charge and you get to choose what you keep and what goes. Perhaps I can point out things you hadn’t seen lurking at the back of a shelf or find a new way to organise thoughts and memories that you will find supportive rather than sabotaging. As we go through the sessions, examining, sorting and letting go, don’t be surprised at the positive effects that will appear in your life.

You may come for hypnotherapy to deal with one particular problem but you will invariably find positive changes in other aspects of your life too.

For example when I first started practicing hypnotherapy I was amazed at the wider ramifications that something as straightforward as giving up smoking could have. However if you have been living with and believing the thought ‘ I can’t give up cigarettes ‘ actually being successful in doing this can set up a domino reaction in your mind. This can then help you knock down and stop believing all those other ‘ I can’t ‘ thoughts that are influencing you in everyday life.

Hypnotherapy is just like throwing a pebble into the pond of your unconscious mind – I wonder where the positive ripples could travel for you !
